In the Disney+ show American Born Chinese, Jin is an insecure Chinese-American kid just trying to get through high school when he befriends the new kid in town, Wei-Chen. Wei-Chen is actually a god on a divine quest, and he drags Jin along with him. And the two come to realize they're more alike than they ever imagined.

The National Book Festival poster will be designed this year by Yuko Shimizu, an illustrator based in New York City and an instructor at the School of Visual Arts. Her work has appeared on The Gap T-shirts, Pepsi cans, Visa card billboards and Microsoft and Target ads, as well as on book covers for Penguin, Scholastic and DC Comics. She has published work in the pages of The New York Times, Time magazine, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and many other publications.

GENE LUEN YANG’S BOXERS & SAINTS MAKES THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD LONGLIST
The National Book Awards announced their Longlist in the category of Young People’s Literature this morning, including Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel diptych about the Boxer Rebellion, Boxers & Saints.
Boxers & Saints is the only graphic novel to make the list. This follows Yang’s American Born Chinese, the first graphic novel ever to be a finalist for the National Book Awards.
Boxers & Saints has received critical praise from across the industry: “Read this, and come away shaking,” says Newbery Honor-winning author Gary Schmidt, while Dave Eggers calls the book “masterful.” The Guardian says it is “remarkable,” while The LA Times calls it “at once humorous and heartbreaking” and The Washington Post describes it as “epic.”
Boxers & Saints is one of the most ambitious graphic novels First Second has ever published. It offers a penetrating insight into not only one of the most controversial episodes of modern Chinese history, but into the very core of our human nature, tackling the difficult subjects of nationalism, faith, and coming-of-age. Gene Luen Yang is rightly called a master of the comics form, and he brings all his formidable talents to bear in this astonishing new work.
In two volumes, Boxers & Saints tells two parallel stories. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. Little Bao, inspired by visions of the Chinese gods, joins a violent uprising against the Western interlopers. Against all odds, their grass-roots rebellion is successful. But in the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them. As the Boxer Rebellion gains momentum, Vibiana must decide whether to abandon her Christian friends or to commit herself fully to Christianity.
Gene Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. He was an established figure in the independent comics scene when he published his first book with First Second, American Born Chinese, which is now in print in over ten languages. ABC's instant critical and commercial success, along with its status as a National Book Award finalist and winner of the Printz Award, catapulted Yang into stardom as a brilliant writer for teens and young adults.

That's a pretty impressive list of publishers! If you follow the links, you will find that some are very niche publishers, and others are very generic. Either way, we are well-represented. Top Shelf will have Andy Runton (Owly) and James Kochalka (Johnny Boo) signing at their booth. Additionally, perusing the Author Signing listings, I noticed names like Gene Yang (American Born Chinese), David Small (Stitches), Matt Phelan (The Storm in the Barn), Tony DiTerlizzi (Nodwick), and Mo Willems (Bizarro World), and I'm sure there are others that are either outside of my paradigm or are new and upcoming. I also noticed that Bill Galvan (Archie) and Fred Mausser (Archie Comics Co-President / Director of Circulation, or at least he was at one point) will be at the Diversity Foundation booth.
The show is June 24th-June 29th. Registration can be done on-line. If you are up for it, there is some interesting programming, though I'm not clear whether the $25 Exhibits Only pass buys you into these or if you have to go to Exhibits Supreme ($100) or actually join ALA ($170 for a day, $260 for the year):

Gene Yang at Big Planet Comics and beyond
Gene Yang says he's in town to speak to schoolchildren at the Kennedy Center tomorrow which will apparently also go out over a webcast. Details desired.
Quick notes - he used the Monkey King because the character was in lots of childrens books his parents had. He read superhero comics, not manga (Dragonball is based on the Monkey King, so I asked). He's working on a new book with Derek Kirk Kim which First Second will publish. His Slave Labor books - Loyola Chin and the San Peligran Order and Gordon Yamamoto And The King Of The Geeks are still available from that publisher.

Sept 29 - Gene Yang at National Book Festival
Yang, author of American Born Chinese, a National Book Finalist apparently has at least one other book out now. He's speaking in the Teens & Children's tent at 2:55 pm and signing at 4 pm. This is on the mall, between the main Smithsonian museums.
