Danny Hellman's Typhon anthology deeply reduced

This isn't Washington news, but I'm posting the fact that Danny Hellman's Typhon anthology has a deeply-reduced sale price because it was a book I meant to review, and Danny sent me a pdf, but I still haven't gotten to it. So, out of guilt, I'll tell you all you can get the book for $14.95, $10 off the original price. I just ordered a paper copy that I hope to have more luck in reading than the e-version. I'm old school and much prefer paper.

For a DC connection, Danny's cartoons used to appear regularly in the Post when the Source section existed, and he was often in the City Paper before they were bought out by a company that rapidly went bankrupt.

Comic Art in today's Washington Post

The Opinion section has what purports to be "The Year in Cartoons." It's not a very good selection.

Steve Brodner illustrates 2009 predictions in the last Sunday Source section, which also presumably means that we won't see Danny Hellman's illustrations in the paper anymore either.

Spurgeon interviews Hellman

We've been seeing Danny Hellman's work regularly in the Post's Source section as well as in the City Paper. Here's a big interview with him by Tom Spurgeon. CR Sunday Interview: Danny Hellman. Comics Reporter (August 24 2008): http://www.comicsreporter.com/index.php/cr_sunday_interview_danny_hellman/

I've got an e-copy of the Typhon book to review, but right now am reading and planning on reviewing Who Can Save Us Now? a book of superhero short stories.

=========

TYPHON is edited and published by Danny Hellman, who brought readers the acclaimed comics anthologies LEGAL ACTION COMICS Volumes 1 & 2 in 2000 and 2003.

"TYPHON is a departure from my previous projects, " says editor Hellman. "I'd initially set out to do a third volume in the Legal Action series, but as the contributions started coming in, I realized that I was looking at a far more ambitious book than what I'd done previously. The work presented in TYPHON covers a wide spectrum of what's possible in comics, from zany, offbeat humor to unnerving existential angst, and on to chilling horror, all of it brought to life with breathtaking, cutting-edge artwork."

Hellman comments, "as a comics reader, I'm a big fan of the anthology format. I first came across the work of many of my favorite cartoonists in anthologies like ARCADE, WEIRDO, RAW and DRAWN & QUARTERLY. I'm proud to carry on in the tradition of those legendary titles, and I believe that TYPHON will stand shoulder-to-shoulder on the bookshelf next to them."

Hellman adds, "anthologies give us the opportunity to enjoy work by talented cartoonists who, for whatever reason, don't produce enough material to fill out solo books. As an editor of anthologies, I'm excited to provide a showcase for artists and work that we might not see otherwise. Diversity makes for a richer comics scene."

Danny Hellman is an internationally-published illustrator whose drawings have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, the Village Voice, and in countless other publications.

Ullman and Hellman

Rob Ullman did this cover to the Washington City Paper's June 20th edition. I saw Rob at Heroes Con and bought another three pieces of original art from him.

and Danny Hellman, who's illustrating a column in the Post's Source section on Sunday has a podcast interview by Robin McConnell at Inkstuds (June 19 2008).

Hellman and the Hulk

The Washington City Paper has a cover by Danny Hellman, who's also still doing regular illos for the Sunday Source in the Post. It's also got a review of the Incredible Hulk movie, which I guess opens tomorrow. See "The latest Hulk is smartly big and stupid, while Savage Grace keeps its horrors pretty," By Tricia Olszewski, Washington City Paper June 12, 2008.

Meanwhile, Keith Phipps in The Onion also reviewed the Hulk fairly positively. Donna Bowman has a good review of The Pixar Touch book by David Price.

Post's Source section has list of best comics AND Danny Hellman

See "The A List: Titles That Earned the Top Grade From Our Reviewers This Year," Washington Post Sunday, December 2, 2007; Page N03.

Also, did I mention that Danny Hellman's illustrating the Source's advice column? He had a good one today which I think was the third he'd done. I think I mentioned this already.
